This blog is a record of my life and my thoughts. It’s a notepad, a journal, and a scrapbook. A lifelong letter to myself.

Yesterday, I got to see a baby robin hatch :) Today there were two more. It was amazing. They’re getting all fluffy now, but they’re still too weak to lift their big ol’ heads, so they kinda flail around until they throw themselves off balance enough to tip over into a different position, lol! They’re really adorable in a…”It’s so ugly, it’s cute” kinda way.  I can’t wait to see how big they get over the next few days.  I wish I wasn’t starting work so soon :( I wanna see them grow up!  Oh well…I’ll just take pictures while I can.

Billy and Sugar.

So, I got to ride yesterday and I was absolutely horrified to find that I couldn’t remember what to do with my hands.  I wish I could repeat my freshman year at the barn and pay so much closer attention and practice so much more…I was such a fool.

I think I have a tendency to switch between direct reining and neck reining when using two hands.  It’s not good.  It confuses the hell out of the horse.  So, I’m gonna run through this.

In order to turn to the right, direct reining, you want a lift of your right hand towards your left shoulder, without crossing over the saddle horn or the mane.  With your left hand you “guide” or maintain slight contact to keep the horse from turning to far to the right.  Your legs should be urging the horse forward while encouraging a bend in the spine with your inside (right) leg adding slight pressure at the cinch, your outside (left) leg slightly away from the body creating an “open door”.  If you open the door too far, your horse will move sideways instead of forward, so you want to keep that energy and that motion moving forward.  The same process for a left turn only reversed, obviously.

When neck reining with two hands you want the horse moving off of your rein instead of following it.  You’re going to lay the left rein against his neck, without pressure on the bit, by moving your left hand towards your right shoulder.  If he doesn’t turn and move away from that pressure, you’ll use your right hand to correct and draw his head gently to the right.  So, your hands will likely move in unison, remaining mostly the same distance apart.

Maybe it’s just a matter of muscle memory.  What used to be a reflex is now forgotten.

I rode Billy bareback and it was kind of uncomfortable…It took me a while to relax and get back my balance.  He kept just gravitating back towards Annie.  I also rode Sugar (Annie’s little sister, Zoe’s, horse)…And I liked her a lot better than Billy, but don’t tell Annie I said so.  Maybe just because of the saddle.  I felt way more secure, lol.  I got her to walk, trot, and canter.  She even followed me a little when I got off.  She seemed to like me a lot.  They all said she was really good for me :) I was so happy.

I got to try egg and spoon, which I had never done before.  It’s a pretty typical kind of relay race at 4-H, open, and fun shows.  I’ve never showed before.  Mona and Annie were talking about letting me show Annie’s been there, done that, 19-year-old QH, Billy, at walk-trot on April 25th, lol.  I’d be terrified, I think.  What do I have to wear?  I’d have to get my hat shaped and stuff…I don’t think I have a shirt that fits me right now, either…I dunno.  I think it would be nice to do it with people who know exactly what’s going on, lol!  It’d probably be good for me.

I’ll have to think about that…

A Productive Day.

Today, I ran a shitload of errands.

I picked up my shots from Cosiano Health Center, drove over to Physician’s Plus, and proceeded to wait for-freaking-ever just to get stuck four times.  Took the vials back to Cosiano, dropped by the post office and mailed letters to Orion and Will.  Sent Sam her new iPod cover that I made for her.

An iPod cover I knit for Sam with leftovers from Moms Christmas present, velcro scraps, and a broken old earring.

Then, I came back to my room, took a nap, and dreamed of horses that I used to know.  I got up and I dialed a woman I haven’t spoken to in over five years.  Georgette Arrellano.  The woman I took lessons from when I was young.  I didn’t think she’d remember me, but she did!  We talked about the horses I used to ride.  Gambler and his buddy Musher.  Both of them have passed away in the last few years.  Gambler, a funny-colored roany brown Quarter Horse gelding.  Gambler, at age 24, two years ago, went down while giving a lesson to a handicapped boy.  They had to put him down.  He had a tumor in his small intestine.  Georgette’s going to get back to me about his registered name, I hope.  When I was a kid, this horse taught me how to ride.  He let me mount up from the fenceline.  He let me gallop him through the pastures.  He let me ride bareback to warm my butt in the winter.  He was so forgiving of my bad hands and poor riding position.  And then there was Musher, the horse that my friend used to take lessons on when we rode together, passed away in November of last year, at age 28.  He was a fleabitten gray Arabian gelding, almost pure white.  His name was originally Gyr, named for the beautiful white gyrfalcon.  He was blind in one eye and always bolted through gates and doorways.  But he was a good guy…They’ll both be dearly missed.  Along with Bob the Barncat and Ethel the fat little miniature goat.  I wish I had a picture of that goat…She was wider than she was tall and only had one horn…XD

I have to remember to visit Georgette before I head up to Wisconsin.  And also the Niefts.  They have a horse now, named Turtle.  I don’t understand why all these people get horses and I’ve never been able to have one…I guess because my parents don’t spoil me rotten and I’d have to take care of the whole thing on my own…Ah well.  Someday!

Bobcat...He was there as long as I can remember...:( Sweet guy. Never hurt a mouse in his whole life, though.

Meet My New Addition.

This is Jinx, my new baby ball python.

He hasn’t had an entry yet because life became rather hectic just after he burst onto the scene.  So, here he is.  I got him (and two little frozen pinky mice) on January 27th at the Pet Supplies Plus for $66.14.  He’s 8-9 months old, about 22 inches long, and is fairly small for his age.  Male ball pythons generally mature to about 2-3 feet.  I’m thinking he’s gonna be nearer to two feet.

He’s just about the sweetest, snuggliest little serpent ever.  Almost everyone who’s been around him just loves him to pieces.  Every time I have friends over, he gets passed around and loved on the entire time. He is extremely tolerant, mellow, and friendly.  He has a deep affection for snuggling into people’s crotches and hiding in hoodie pockets.

Jinx!

Isnt he handsome?

I am downright smitten with his tummy.

You can see here that he was kinda ashy since he was getting ready to shed.

In Memory of Jack the Fish.

Today, my roommate and I woke up to find her fish peacefully resting on the flourescent colored rocks at the bottom of his bowl.  Sleeping the big sleep, if you catch my drift.

This is the eulogy I wrote for his funeral.  Unfortunately, the ground is frozen, so we have to wait to bury him.  For now, he’s still on the bottom of the bowl.  (Come to think of it, that’s not really sanitary…)

Jack’s Eulogy

We are gathered here today to pay our respects to the memory of Jack the Fish.  :(  Although he was only with us for a short time, he brought much joy to our daily lives.  He loved to swim (we think) and was always very excited when it was time to eat.  He wagged his tail when you called his name.  He was a good fish and will be sorely missed.

Rest in peace, Jack.  Rest in peace.
